Oracle Cloud Offering:- OCI-C vs OCI

Oracle Cloud Offering:- OCI-C vs OCI

Very often I came across same question about Oracle Cloud Offering and difference between OCI-C and OCI. Many people got confuse between, OCI-C and OCI, hence I thought I should write difference between OCI-C and OCI.

As per my knowledge early 2012 Oracle Cloud was introduced. Oracle has started it with very few services and later on many services have been added; still Oracle working on new offerings and services for Enterprise customers; I think it’s ongoing process of every organization to stay in such competitive IT industry.

Cloud has mainly three service categories i.e. IaaS, PaaS and SaaS. Oracle started these cloud offerings under banner of “Oracle Public Cloud” and later on Oracle come up with Private Cloud offerings too. In mid of 2014 Oracle introduced Bare Metal Cloud Service.

Now many things are changed and Oracle has rebranding of Cloud offerings and services. Oracle Public Cloud infrastructure is renamed as Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Classic (OCI-C) and Bare Metal Cloud Service is now known as Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). We can say it’s rebranding; definitely there are many changes in internal infrastructure and offerings too.

OCI-C is knows as 1st generation and OCI is knows as 2nd generation cloud services which are based on latest technology and higher performance compared to 1st generation services.

Here I have bifurcate OCI-C and OCI as below,

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure – Classic
(1st Generation)
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
(2nd Generation)
Formally known as Oracle Public Cloud
Formally known as Bare Metal Cloud Service
This service offers VMs
This service offers VMs and Bare Metal
OCI Classic VMs are based on Nimbula Director (Xen based Hypervisor)
OCI VMs are based on KVM  Hypervisor
OCI-C provides Compute, Storage, Networking, FastConnect services
OCI provides Compute, Storage, Networking, FastConnect, Database, Containers, Governance and Security services
Deployment Models :- a) Elastic Compute b) Dedicated Compute c) Sparc Model 300 (VMs Only)
Deployment Models :- VMs and Bare Metal. (Sparc model is not available here.)

Hope this will help to understand the differences.

Very soon I will publish one more post regarding how to choose subscription and which type of deployment model  can be chosen for different workloads.
